Start Your Tech Career With Fees-Free

Yes, you can use your “Fees Free” tertiary study year.

Get up to $12,000 refunded from your Dev Academy qualification when you graduate. Because our programme is under one year long, your entire qualification is covered by the government’s “final-year Fees Free” scheme.

You’re likely eligible if you:

  • Have been a New Zealand resident or citizen for 3+ years
  • Haven’t completed a tertiary qualification before (in NZ or overseas)
Submit your IRD number when you apply. When you graduate, fill out a form and IRD refunds the full Dev Academy tuition back to Studylink.

If you don't qualify, there are options

Even if you don't meet the "Fees Free" eligibility criteria, you're not out of luck. Here are other financial aid and support pathways that many Dev Academy students tap into.

StudyLink Student Loan

If you enrol in Dev Academy, you can apply for an interest-free Student Loan to cover tuition, course-related costs (like equipment or textbooks), and, if needed, living costs. You only repay once you earn above a certain income threshold.

Student Allowance

For eligible students (full-time study, standard residency criteria, and depending on your parental income if under 24), the Student Allowance provides a weekly living payment that you do not have to pay back.

Course-related costs subsidy

Through the Student Loan scheme, you may also get support for course-related costs (like a laptop, software, study materials, or other tools needed for the tech courses).

Benefit or Return-to-Work Support

If you're currently on a benefit or transitioning from work/caregiver responsibilities, there may be allowances or support available alongside or instead of traditional student finance. Check with WINZ and MSD.
